Under the Hammer with Ben Clayden
Kowethas Ertach Kernow has teamed up with Ben Clayden a young Cornishman with a passion for old, antique and historic objects. Ben has worked as an archaeologist on various projects around Cornwall and now works in the fine art and antiques division of Lodge & Thomas, one of the oldest auction houses in Cornwall, established in 1892. Ben will share images and information about some of the Cornish related items that have come under the hammer including artwork, antiques and perhaps some strange, rare and quirky objects.
Lodge & Thomas Sale 19th April 2024
This first edition of Observations of the Antiquities, Historical and Monumental........ by Dr William Borlase (1696-1772) was first published in 1754. It contains a wealth of knowledge and drawings about Cornwall at that time albeit some of his thinking has now been superseded. That does not detract from this important work and volumes such as these do not come to the market often.
A superb early 20th century stained glass and leaded fanlight which incorporates the arms of the Duke of Cornwall together with the Cornish motto 'One and All', which is more often seen these days in the Cornish language as 'Onan Hag Oll'. Gold bezants showing in the shield were first seen in the arms of Richard Earl of Cornwall in the 13th century.
