Cornwall Aviation Heritage Centre saved - 23rd December 2022

Cornwall Aviation Heritage Centre has some fantastic news broken by Warren Wilkins of the Newquay Voice and Voice newspapers, the Cornwall Aviation Heritage Centre has had a nearby site offered to them by a local landowner. This important heritage venue can continue as a valued part of the local economy subject to planning and financial support from Cornwall Council.

After the potential near destruction of this museum and its valuable collection through action by Cornwall Council, let's hope they give all the support they need. After all we are led to believe Cornwall Council will be making loads more money from the existing site given as the reason for not allowing continuance of the museum there. Councillor Louis Gardner indicated they wanted to maximise Cornwall Council's income from the airport by getting more companies to move onto the heritage centre site.

The loss of this valuable and quite unique aviation museum for education, residents and visitors enjoyment was seemingly not a major factor in their decision making. Besides that there would be the loss of income to local businesses who benefit from this quality local attraction being within an important holiday area. Perhaps Councillor Gardner, who is relatively new to Cornwall, considers that sun, sea and sand is sufficient to encourage mass rather than quality tourism in bolstering the Cornish economy.

As one of Cornwall's greatest politicians, David Penhaligon, once said 'You need more in an economy than just tourism, ice cream and deckchairs'. You also need quality venues to encourage quality tourism with greater spending power as not everyone wants to visit Cornwall just for sun, sea and sand. Cornish culture and its wider heritage attractions are essential to achieve an improved quality tourism balance.
