Cornish Coffee Lounge

The renamed Cornish Coffee Lounge continues to reflect the ethos of both Len who runs Kowethas Ertach Kernow (Association for Cornish Heritage) and Newquay Museum. There is a warm, welcoming and friendly atmosphere with an environmentally positive approach. We support the bilingual nature of Cornwall which can be heard in Kernewek, the Cornish language, at many events. Also supporting interest in the other Celtic nations and their languages and cultural heritage.

In February Kowethas Ertach Kernow was pleased to invite Urban Kelt to open a coffee shop in our Museum Gallery Room. As the Celtic Lounge it was opened in February 2020 by Grand Bard of Gorsedh Kernow, Elizabeth Carne carried out the honours with a opening speech in Kernewek and English reflecting the bilingual support the Newquay Museum coffee shop. Former Grand Bard Merv Davey piped the opening with the Cornish anthem 'Trelawny'.

Come and visit Cornish Coffee Lounge and enjoy a break amongst Cornish art and objects. Kowethas Ertach Kernow is a partner in the Newquay Museum and there is also lots to see in the other museum rooms. as well as Towan Vintage which sells vintage items and helps support these museum rooms.

There will continue to be organised music and language events at the Cornish Coffee Lounge, which is the heart of the Cornish Cultural Hub Tewynblustri including other Cornish heritage events, illustrated talks and music organised by Kowethas Ertach Kernow. Smaller groups are welcome to use the Cornish Coffee Lounge for meetings and events.

Kowethas Ertach Kernow coffeeshop at Newquay Museum

During February 2020 Kowethas Ertach Kernow working with Urban Kelt transformed our Museum Gallery Room at Newquay Museum by incorporating a Celtic themed Coffee Shop, The Celtic Lounge, run by Urban Kelt. This was a vegan, ethically based venue created using repurposed materials and aiming to be environmentally friendly. As well, The Celtic Lounge looked to being bilingual and encourage interest in Kernewek, the Cornish language as well as continuing the theme of sharing Cornish heritage and Celtic interests.

We were very pleased that the Grand Bard of Gorsedh Kernow, Elizabeth Carne agreed to come and open The Celtic Lounge and say a few words beforehand. Also immediate past Grand Bard Merv Davey agreed to play the Cornish bagpipes, playing that well known Cornish anthem 'Trelawny'. Merv also had a few words to say prior to the opening. The Celtic Lounge has built up a good and loyal following and expanded its range of interests and activities by working as part of the newly established Cornish Cultural Hub at Newquay Museum.

Time moves on and we are still here and are now known as the Cornish Coffee Lounge and at the heart of the Cornish Cultural Hub Tewynblustri. We continue our ethical view and promote the circular economy with the addition of our Towan Vintage shop selling preloved and repurposed articles.
